Alanna Jaworski Delivers Opening Remarks at the Boston Affordable Housing Summit

The principles that make affordable density dignified and beloved

Density doesn’t have to compromise. Context matters. Community matters. And when design is intentional, it changes what’s possible.

Alanna Jaworski delivered the opening remarks at Bisnow’s 2026 Boston Affordable Housing Summit, presenting a framework for designing affordable density that works—and endures.

The approach rests on seven principles:

  • Reflect local context
  • Compensate for loss of privacy with greater social connection
  • Design urbanism appropriate to its place
  • Mix use and tenure
  • Build with dignity to last
  • Include features that foster community
  • Create a sense of ownership and address

These aren’t theoretical. Alanna walked the room through Union Studio projects—Meshacket Commons in Edgartown, Capitol Square in Providence, Trinity Place, Brewster Landing, Sandy Woods Farm Arts Community—each grounded in these principles. Each proving that affordable housing and dignified design aren’t opposites. They’re partners.
