Principal

Future-minded pioneer of sustainable design and building performance who is always looking to bring others into the fold.

Joe strives to design buildings and create places that keep the future and our environment in mind. He has over 25 years of architectural experience that includes expertise in buildings with net-zero energy usage, the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, market-rate and affordable multifamily housing, prefabricated building design, commercial buildings, and private residences. Joe knows architects play a pivotal role in creating our environment and have a duty to do it as sustainably and equitably as we can.

Before joining Union, Joe was the founding principal of Distill Studio, a Providence-based architectural firm with a focus on sustainable building science and integrated design process. He has received international recognition for the architectural design of Providence’s “Box Office”, a commercial office building constructed from recycled shipping containers. Joe was the first Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) in the State of Rhode Island registered through the Passive House Institute U.S. and is a lifetime member of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) where he has served on the Board of Directors.

When not in the office, Joe can be found with his family in the mountains of New Hampshire where he consistently gets reminded of how old he is as he watches his son, Finn, fly by on his race skis or get air on his mountain bike.

Joe received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from The Ohio State University and a Master of Architecture, summa cum laude, from the Rhode Island School of Design.
