This transformation of a 135+ year-old site into a vibrant hub reflects DownCity Design’s commitment to creativity and community. The design carefully balances historic preservation with modern function, featuring a façade of thermally modified wood, refreshed fluted block in DCD’s signature teal, and a bright red canopy that welcomes students and provides shelter for RIPTA bus riders.

At the center of the studio is a reimagined courtyard, once a utilitarian loading dock, now a lively gathering space framed by classrooms, workshops, and offices. Visitors are drawn in through a breezeway featuring a colorful mural and dramatic lighting, leading to a space alive with light and activity. The project’s boldest move—unifying four buildings with varying floor levels into a seamless, barrier-free campus—ensures accessibility while creating an inspiring environment for collaboration and connection.
