Leading with Pride:
AIA Philadelphia Celebrates EDI and PRIDE Through Member Spotlights
“Being part of the queer community invites a heightened awareness of belonging, and we bring that awareness to design outcomes and, maybe more importantly, the design process.” – Ben Willis, Associate Principal at UNION
AIA Philadelphia recently interviewed LGBTQIA+ members of the Philly architecture community who are shaping a more equitable, just, and vibrant profession. In her June message, AIA Philadelpia president Danielle DiLeo Kim, AIA, underscored how great design starts with inclusion—and thrives when every voice has a seat at the table. Our own Ben Willis (Associate Principal at Union Studio) is among three local leaders who were interviewed for this inspiring piece.
UNION-designed Aldersbridge at East Point to Provide a Welcoming Home for LGBTQIA+ Seniors
Located in East Providence, Aldersbridge at East Point is Rhode Island’s first senior housing community intentionally designed for LGBTQIA+ residents and their allies. With 39 affordable apartments and welcoming communal areas, the project addresses the unique challenges many queer elders face—social isolation, discrimination, and a lack of culturally affirming amenities.
Rather than retrofit a generic senior building, our team worked closely with local advocacy groups to ensure every detail—from accessible layouts to multi-purpose lounges—supports connection, dignity, and pride. At Union, we believe our buildings should reflect the rich diversity of their users. Aldersbridge stands as a testament to designing not just for people, but with them.
