We’re thrilled to announce that The Residences at Riverside Square has been honored with a Grow Smart Award for “Outstanding Smart Growth Projects.” Designed by Union, this development turned a once-contaminated industrial lot in East Providence into 16 units of affordable housing, serving extremely low- to moderate-income households—including three homes reserved for young people aging out of foster care.
Completed in 2024, the project thoughtfully bridges commercial and residential zones at a human scale. Traditional townhouse forms with modern details feature covered stoops and fenced yards that activate the street frontage, while six-unit walk-ups balance density and neighborhood character through dual front-and-rear entries. Parking is tucked to the rear behind a landscaped buffer, and the building sits steps from local shops and bus stops—proving how smart design can revitalize a community, deliver much-needed housing, and honor its surroundings.
