An Historic Landmark, Meticulously Reconstructed
After fire completely destroyed an iconic, historic building in the heart of Nantucket, Union was entrusted with leading the architectural design of its restoration. This beloved boutique hotel, renowned for its distinctive wraparound porches and historic charm since the 1860s, has been thoughtfully rebuilt to honor its storied past while ensuring its future.
Our team approached this sensitive project with deep respect for both the building’s historical significance and its place in Nantucket’s community fabric. The restored 8,810-square-foot structure maintains the cherished characteristics of the original—including its Federal-style architecture, classic porches, and traditional shingled exterior—while incorporating modern safety features and enhanced accessibility.
Collaborating closely with the property’s owners, local preservationists, and skilled craftspeople, our design carefully recreates the historic details, from the signature banisters and railings to the precise placement of architectural elements. The new Veranda House features 19 guest rooms across four stories, complemented by staff accommodations, common spaces, and updated amenities. Though the building is new, every design decision was made with reverence for its predecessor, ensuring this landmark continues to reflect Nantucket’s architectural heritage.
We are grateful to have played a role in preserving this cherished piece of Nantucket’s identity. The restored Veranda House embodies the power of thoughtful design and community resilience as it honors its historic legacy and opens its doors to new generations.
