Angela Fernandes

A passionate preservationist with an eye for adaptive reuse. Quick witted and an excellent networker, she’s often quiet at first, but that doesn’t last long!

An experienced designer and preservationist who is originally from Mumbai, India, Angela worked on various urban design and planning projects as an architecture student, which involved extensive research and documentation of the heritage precincts in the region. Her interest in historic preservation originates from these experiences which culminated in her final year dissertation which explored the existing dichotomy between conservation and development in a metropolis. Post her graduation, she practiced as a registered architect in India for over four years gaining experience in varied  design, research and preservation roles along the way.

A recent graduate of Cornell University with an MA degree in Historic Preservation Planning, at Cornell Angela gained experience in preservation law, building materials conservation and documentation which added to her skill set and knowledge of preservation policies and practices. She has also completed an optional semester at Cornell’s Gensler Family AAP Center based in New York City. During her time in the City, she had the opportunity to work and collaborate with city agencies on a climate resilience neighborhood study of Port Richmond, Staten Island. This aligned well with her interest in exploring such pressing planning issues from the preservation lens, and motivated her master’s thesis research in analyzing the role of preservation planning in climate change adaptation of historic resources. She continues to pursue work in the field of preservation, urbanism, and climate resiliency in her role at Union.
