Mikéla SumnerASSOC. AIA

Designer

Creative and versatile while maintaining a warmth that is inviting to colleagues and clients alike.

Mikéla is primarily interested in residential architecture and the intricacies of designing for affordability, adaptability, comfort, and market trends.  Originally drawn to the profession because of the wide range of scales at which an architect works, she is as excited about laying out a small bathroom as composing a community pattern book. Above all, Mikéla values innovative, high-quality design no matter the complexity of the project. At Union, Mikéla works across a variety of projects, jumping between conceptual renderings, technical details, and research projects with ease. She was an integral part of the team behind the Missing Middle Housing on the Cape report.

Outside of the office, Mikéla volunteers as a mentor with ACE Rhode Island where she enjoys engaging with high school students who are exploring their interest in architecture and related professions. On nights and weekends, she and her husband are hard at work renovating their first home in Acushnet.

Mikéla graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, magna cum laude, from Wheaton College, and a Master of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design.
