  • AIA Rhode Island, Merit Award for Urban Design, 2013

This proposed master plan was completed for the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority (NRA), an agency that owns waterfront land surrounding a public park in the town’s downtown commercial district. The NRA hired Union to help develop a vision for the property with the goal of balancing a viable economic development opportunity with the public’s enjoyment of the waterfront open space. The process involved several public meetings and a thorough analysis of the existing site. Recommendations in the vision included more clearly defining the park, increasing open space by 30%, improving circulation and pedestrian connections, preserving parking, and creating two new mixed-use buildings at the perimeter of the site to generate economic development.

Union created all the graphics to support the vision plan, participated in public engagement, and presented the design to the public where it was met with applause at a public meeting with over 200 attendees.
