Coastal resiliency planning for one of the most historically-significant architectural sites in the USA.
Working with a team of experts in multiple fields, Union has helped to outline and identify actions The Gables can take to adapt its campus and buildings for anticipated changes in groundwater elevations, precipitation patterns, storm intensity, and sea level to improve the resilience of the campus buildings in the face of climate impacts.
The work consists of short-term and long-term adaptation plans which identify triggers for action. It required an iterative process of moving from conceptual recommendations to fully implementable technical documents devised by a team of experts within the fields of: climate science; historic preservation; architecture; and environmental, civil, and structural engineering.
The result of this two-year project is Preserving History: Assessments and Climate Adaptations at the House of the Seven Gables, an interdisciplinary adaptation plan for The Gables that is immediately actionable for short-term building and site improvements while laying out longer-term actions over the next several decades.
