Building Bites: Understanding the Public Review Process

Our latest Building Bites session focused on a key part of architectural practice that happens beyond the drawing board—public meetings. From zoning hearings and planning board reviews to community workshops and historic commissions, these forums are where project ideas meet regulatory frameworks and public input.

The session offered a practical look at what it means to prepare for and participate in these meetings. We discussed how to tailor presentations based on the audience—whether it’s a zoning board evaluating compliance, or a neighborhood group seeking to understand how a project will impact their community. Clarity, conciseness, and thoughtful communication were emphasized as essential tools for presenting design intent effectively.

We also explored the importance of preparation—from understanding which aspects of a project are “by-right” to anticipating questions and using visuals that speak clearly to both professionals and the public. These conversations serve as a reminder that good design includes not only what we build, but how we build trust and transparency through the process.
