The popular summer and tourist destination, Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard is facing a critical housing shortage for its year-round residents—a challenge shared across many communities on Cape Cod and the Islands. Excited to be a key collaborator in addressing Edgartown’s housing crisis, Union is leading the design of Meshacket Commons, which transforms a 6.76-acre municipal parcel into an affordable neighborhood of 40 homes. The development includes 36 rental units serving residents earning 30-100% of the area median income, complemented by 4 ownership homes for those earning 90-120%.
Developed by Island Housing Trust with Affirmative Investments, the $22 million project tackles the island’s housing crisis while prioritizing sustainability and community.
David Ennis, president of Affirmative Investments commented on the collaborative process involved in making Meshacket Commons a reality, “This is very satisfying work and there is real camaraderie because we are largely working together with a sense of purpose that goes beyond the tasks at hand – we are working on creating a community and houses that will become real homes for individuals and families with a range of incomes. We look forward to seeing these buildings rise and come on line and watch happy people move in.”
