Over the course of a decade, Union worked with Smith Hill Community Development Corporation on a phased revitalization of existing houses in the Smith Hill neighborhood of Providence. This project is an example of neighborhood revitalization completed over scattered sites, and together, we transformed neglected buildings into 79 units of affordable housing.
The plan addressed two issues: the addition of affordable rental units and the acquisition and rehabilitation of foreclosed and vacant properties. This approach provided much-needed affordable housing while repairing, restoring, and improving a densely populated residential neighborhood in the city.
Several existing structures were rehabilitated, and several new duplexes and triplexes were designed and constructed to fill vacant lots. The architecture was designed to knit seamlessly with the scale, detailing, and quality of the existing historic neighborhood.
