Slocum Farm will be an instructive example of the possibilities and benefits of what has been called the Agricultural Open Space Model. By carefully integrating residential units in a variety of types into an agricultural operation in which both farmland and an existing nursery and are returned to use, the development will provide a model for preserving the viability of family farms. While the sale of residential units will subsidize the thin margins of the farm operations, the farm itself with its “working open space” provides added value to the residences as well.Inclusion of rental units within the re-purposed dairy barn will provide the possibility that seasonal labor could live on-site. Possible retail of value-added farm products such as jams and pies could add even more interests and value to the plan.
