Designed for MassDevelopment on the site of a decommissioned army base in central Massachusetts, this masterplan consisted of a new mixed-density and mixed-use neighborhood consisting of nearly 3,000 new multi-family, townhomes and detached single family residential homes.
This project reconstructed and built upon some of the exceptional early planning reflected in the oldest parts of the base. A strong existing parade ground framed by barracks on one side and officers housing on the other form the heart of this proposed new neighborhood. Building upon this pattern, Union collaborated with Sasaki Associates of Watertown, MA to develop a new community plan, architecture and design guidelines to design a new traditionally inspired residential community that knits seamlessly with the topography and history of this base.
The neighborhood is intended to serve as a national model for integrating walkable planning and sustainable building practices into decommissioned government facilities.
