Union Studio was hired as a design consultant by Gilbane Development Company to revise an existing building design in an effort to make it more contextually-sensitive to the neighborhood. Working with Gilbane and local neighborhood and preservation groups, Union Studio analyzed the existing building design for 257 Thayer Street and proposed changes to the facade. In approaching revised elevation concepts, we studied neighborhood precedent and introduced massing and material variations that respond to existing neighborhood buildings: the Thayer Street elevation blends appropriately with the street’s 2-4 story mercantile buildings, while the Euclid and Meeting Street elevations feature cornices and pitched roofs appropriate to these residential blocks. By separating the buildings with a courtyard at the Brook Street elevation, the building strikes a more inviting balance with the surrounding collegiate neighborhood. Retained as a consultant, Union Studio is not the architect-of-record on this project.
